Trainee Course

Trainee course 2010/11 at Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.

Should you be successfully appointed to a trainee course, you will join your fellow recruits in what can be the most challenging and rewarding time of your life.

Elements of the Course

Each day you will begin with a physical training session, this ensures that your fitness is maintained throughout the course and beyond.

The course is not solely practical and if successful you attend around 60 lectures, digesting a huge amount of information that you will be tested weekly throughout the course. Some of the areas include:

  • Prevention and Education

  • Rescue from Height

  • Building Construction

  • Urban Search and Rescue

You will undergo scenario training in the following areas: 

  • Road Traffic Collisions

  • Live Fires

  • Rail Crashes

  • Fires in high rise buildings

  • Confined space working

  • Hazardous materials

Continuous Assessment

Your development doesn’t stop after you leave the course, you will work to achieve your competency in the role through an NVQ.
